Copa America 2024 Stadiums: U.S. Readies for Second Hosting Since 2016 Milestone

The United States is set to host the Copa America for the second time, following the landmark Copa America Centenario in 2016. This earlier event marked the centenary celebration of CONMEBOL and the Copa America, and it was notable for being the first Copa America held outside South America.

The 2016 tournament was a special commemorative edition, not the 45th official edition of Copa America. It was organized as part of a unique agreement between CONMEBOL (South American football confederation) and CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean football confederation). This special edition broke the traditional four-year cycle and expanded the field to sixteen teams, including all ten from CONMEBOL and six from CONCACAF.

Chile achieved a significant milestone by becoming the fourth nation to win two consecutive titles in CONMEBOL tournaments, joining the ranks of Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Meanwhile, Argentina faced a challenging period, losing their third consecutive final in a major tournament, following defeats to Germany in the 2014 World Cup and to Chile in the 2015 Copa America.

In an ironic turn of events, the 2015 Copa America final also saw Argentina defeated by Chile, with the latter triumphing again in the finals through a penalty shootout. As they enter Copa America 2024, both teams find themselves in Group A, setting the stage for what could be seen as a revenge match for Messi and his team.

Since that turning point, Lionel Messi and Argentina have been on a victory spree. They first clinched the Copa America 2021 title in Brazil’s iconic Maracana Stadium, triumphing over the defending champions Brazil in the final. This victory was followed by a win against the Euro champions, Italy, in the 2022 Summer Finalissima. The streak continued with a remarkable victory at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where they bested the title holders, France. With such a formidable track record, Argentina heads into the tournament as a top contender and a potential winner.
