Mexico, though showing signs of improvement from their struggle to qualify for the World Cup, couldn’t capitalize on their chances.
Portugal, ranked fourth, was without their star player Cristiano Ronaldo, absent due to injuries. The absence of the Ronaldo jersey on the soccer field was felt, as the Portuguese team had to adapt without their leading scorer, who had also missed a previous match against Brazil. This victory serves as a crucial momentum builder for Portugal before the World Cup, while Mexico looks to refine their game ahead of their opener against Cameroon.

In the knockout rounds, both Haiti and the USA faced elimination by a strong Jamaican team—Haiti in the quarterfinals and the USA in the semifinals. On another part of the soccer field, Panama’s campaign ended in a gripping extra-time loss to Mexico in the semifinals. The finale saw Mexico emerge victorious, conquering the field with a 3:1 win against Jamaica to lift the Gold Cup.
The triumph of Mexico in the Gold Cup was underpinned by an array of talent drawn from across the globe, with key players plying their trade in European championships and the MLS. Giovanni dos Santos brought his flair from LA Galaxy, while Carlos Vela’s skill was honed at Real Sociedad. Guardado’s leadership at PSV Eindhoven, Ochoa’s acrobatic saves at Malaga, and the dynamic duo of Reyes and Herrera from Porto all contributed to the team’s success.
